Assorted Love Songs

Peptalk is proud to present: Assorted Love Songs, an EP by Alexander Wren. In 2014, the Fort Wayne native moved to Nashville in search of a challenge. He had been writing songs since his freshman year in high school and started feeling the pull to immerse himself in a creative culture. Not long after the move, he recorded his first his debut effort entitled The Good in Goodbye, which was released in 2016. Over the following year, Wren found himself listening to more and more classic artists like Randy Newman, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette and Harry Nilsson, which began to greatly influence his songwriting.

We started recording a few songs in the fall of 2017 and then a couple more at the top of 2018. The process was so fluid. Alex came in with songs that I would describe as “classics you’ve never heard”. We knew we wanted to preserve that feeling but we also wanted to explore with instrumentation and sonics that didn’t feel derivative of one genre or era. There’s a song called “Don’t You Go Fallin’” … what we envisioned for the song was basically, it’s 1971 - The Beatles are the backing band for an old country artist and for some reason the crew ended up recording in a Mexico City hotel lobby - and then someone has the idea to ask Henry Mancini to come down and arrange backing vocals. The lobby windows are wide open and there’s a mariachi band playing down the street … We didn’t even stop to ask ourselves if any of this made sense, we just said, “Perfect. Let’s do it.” It’s a great example of what the creative vibe was like while we were working on these songs. We felt like we were headed somewhere new that was strangely familiar.

Zoe Sky Jordan

Marina Del Rey

Toronto native, Nashville-based, alt-pop artist Zoe Sky Jordan grew up in an immensely creative environment. Her Father, Marc Jordan, has had quite a rich career in music... not only as a solo artist, but Jordan has written songs for Rod Stewart, Diana Ross, Cher, Chicago and the list goes on. In 1977, he landed a record deal with Warner Bros. in L.A. The following year he released his first record, Mannequin - the lead single from that record was a song called 'Marina Del Rey'.

As an homage to her musical upbringing and to time itself, Zoe has covered her dad's 1978 hit.

“The song ‘Marina Del Rey’ is about dreaming and living through a culture shift,” says Jordan. “I’ve always loved the song, and I grew up singing it around the house. As I get older, it takes on a new meaning. It’s about reckoning with your dreams and expectations. I wanted my version to feel like a continuation of my dad’s, like it had been playing on low for the last 40 years, slowly twisting and warping, and when we finally turned the volume back up this is what it had transformed into.”

Love That's Divine

Bryan Cates

Love That's Divine

If you've ever had the privilege of hearing his music or seeing him perform Live then you know. Almost eight years since his last release, Peptalk is proud to present the newest work from Bryan Cates, “Love That's Divine.” The song needs no introduction, however, I will say this: I've probably listened to it close to a hundred times over the last few months. Granted, quite a few of those were while I was mixing, editing the podcast, or working on the Live Session, but somehow every time I hear it, I'm moved. The song is full of reflection and completely void of distraction. It's lonely but the good kind of lonely. The kind that eventually makes you feel like maybe you're not so lonely after all–but those are just my words. If those don't pull you in, Bryan's may, "All the things that I used to be about - they're no use to me now - they're like wood, hay, stubble at my feet - still I know that the place where I'm at may be nothing in an hour - may be vacant in a day or in a week..."

Ezra Carey

Put Your Hands On Me

Three years since his last release, Peptalk is proud to introduce the newest single from Ezra Carey, “Put Your Hands On Me” from his forthcoming EP, Lights On An Endless Stage. Led by instinct and guttural emotion there is an immediate physicality present in Ezra’s music. Surrounded by a sonic haze of analog oscillation and an almost cyborg rhythm section his weathered voice emerges, “put your hands on me / or let me go..."
